4 Advantages of Working as a Trucker

Trucking takes many forms. Some drivers will operate as a taxi truck in Sydney based firmly in the local area, delivering freight between stores and warehouses, while others will have a more international outlook. Truckers often cross countries and, in some cases, entire continents, delivering shipments to far-flung locations. The job comes with its fair share of stress but also has a host of advantages.

#1 Freedom

The main reason that most people go into a career in trucking is because it represents unbridled freedom. The call of the open road is too loud for some to ignore, and trucking will take you to all kinds of new places. Long-distance truckers enjoy the most freedom. If you can handle long periods of time alone, then you’ll be able to see the world while getting paid to do it. It’s important not to romanticize this part of the job too much, however, and remember that truckers work to a tight schedule. You won’t be able to stay too long in one place at the risk of delaying the shipment, but trucking is nonetheless one of the best ways to see parts of the world that would otherwise have remained out of reach.

#2 Flexibility

This wasn’t always the case, but the world of trucking is nowadays much more flexible than in the past. Drivers have far more of a say over their own destiny. They can easily find and bid on loads online using a hot shot trucking service, sourcing the ideal jobs for their circumstances, and even setting their own price. Determining what you’ll be shipping and where you’ll be shipping it to makes a big difference and means that it’s now easy to work trucking around other commitments, something which was previously impossible. No longer an isolating career, you can now enjoy the freedom of the open road without sacrificing other areas of your life.

#3 Job security

Whatever happens in the world, one thing remains certain: truckers are essential. Companies will always need to trade goods, so there will always be job openings. That’s a big advantage, especially in uncertain economic times, and it takes a lot of stress out of your life. Worries over job security can build up and really affect mental health, but truckers can rest easy knowing that there will always be a place for them. Even if you don’t regularly deliver freight, simply having the experience on your CV gives you a long-term safety net.

#4 It’s comfortable (really)

Trucks haven’t always had the best reputation. They’re often thought of as too cold in winter, too hot in summer, and uncomfortable during long rides. That simply isn’t the case anymore. Design and technology have advanced to such a degree that many trucks are veritably state of the art and hugely comfortable. They come with top-of-the-range air conditioning, efficient heating, and deep, luxurious seats. Satellite navigation, digital radio, and voice control all improve the driver experience, and technology is only going to get better. Tomorrow’s trucks will be even more comfortable than today’s, so there’s never been a more opportune time to get into the industry.
