What It’s Like Living in a Tourist Town During the Off Season?

There are many benefits of living in a tourist town. However, the benefits of living in such a place during the off season isn’t as frequently talked about.

Here are some of the many benefits of the off season living in a tourist town you may not have thought about:

  • Cheaper Cost of Living
  • Less Waiting

Calmer Streets

Living in a tourist town during the off season might not be as appealing to some as living in a tourist town during the peak season. But there are some perks that come with it.

There are calmer streets and a quieter environment, which makes it easier to get around without being too distracted by the bustling activity. There is also more time for exploring and discovering new places, which tourists often miss out on when they are too busy sightseeing.

A Welcomed Break

One of the best things about living in a tourist town during the off season is that you get to experience the time of year when there are significantly fewer tourists around. You’ll get to see your hometown as it usually is rather than how it is when it’s overrun with people.

The off season can also be a great time to enjoy many of the activities that you would normally be too busy to do during peak times. You can go hiking and biking without having to worry about getting stuck in traffic or fighting for parking spots.

Cheaper Cost of Living

During this time, you’ll also find that the cost of living is much cheaper. You may notice lower rent prices, cheaper costs for transportation, and general goods and services are offered at lower prices.

Less Waiting

Tourist towns are generally much busier during their peak seasons. This typically causes longer wait times for almost everything. Longer waits when wanting to go eat at a local restaurant, longer lines or wait times at popular activities, and your general commute may take longer due to there being more cars on the road.

Fewer Things to Do

However, during the off season you’ll likely see a dramatic decline in things to do. Depending on how busy the peak season gets, restaurants and other services may close up shop until peak season arrives or decrease their hours significantly.

This can lead to much less opportunities to participate in activities. However, tourist town locals generally enjoy this change of pace. It allows locals to sit back and kick their feet up while focusing on other interests of life.

Is A Tourist Town the Perfect Place for You?

Whistler is a tourist town in British Columbia, Canada. It has a population of a little more than 11,000 people, but it has become a popular destination for tourists because of skiing and other snow-related activities available.

During the off season, Whistler becomes a lot quieter and you will see fewer people on the streets. You will also find that most restaurants are closed and there is not much to do during the day. If you choose to visit during this time then you should come prepared for cold weather because it can get really chilly.

The population of Whistler during the off-season winds down to less than 50% of the peak season population. During this time, most of the locals are retirees or work in jobs that only require them to work occasionally.

Not to mention, they get to enjoy all of the above mentioned perks that we talked about earlier.  Real estate for sale in Whistler can also be found to be a bit cheaper than its peak season prices.

If you’ve been debating on relocating to a tourist town, don’t miss your opportunity to score big during the off season months.
