Brief introduction to VRRP
VRRP is the abbreviation of Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol. This protocol is a routing protocol proposed by IETF to solve the single point of failure of configuring static gateway in LAN. The formal RFC2338 protocol standard has been launched in 1998. VRRP is widely used in edge networks. Its design goal is to support the failure transfer of IP data traffic under specific circumstances without causing confusion, allow the host to use a single router, and maintain the connectivity between routers even in the case of first hop router failure.
Role of VRRP protocol
VRRP is a selection protocol, which can dynamically assign the responsibility of a virtual router to one of the VRRP routers on the LAN. The VRRP router that controls the IP address of the virtual router is called the master router. It is responsible for forwarding data packets to these virtual IP addresses. Once the primary router is unavailable, this selection process provides a dynamic failover mechanism, which allows the IP address of the virtual router to be used as the default first hop router of the end host.
VRRP is a LAN access device backup protocol or a routing fault-tolerant protocol. All hosts in a local area network are set with a default gateway, so that the messages sent by the host whose destination address is not in the network segment will be sent to the layer 3 switch through the default gateway, so as to realize the communication between the host and the external network. When the default router goes down, the internal host will not be able to communicate with the outside. If the router is set with VRRP, then the virtual router will enable the backup router to realize the whole network communication.
Important concepts in VRRP protocol
In VRRP protocol, there are two groups of important concepts: VRRP router and virtual router, master router and backup router. VRRP router refers to the router running VRRP, which is a physical entity; Virtual router is a logical concept created by VRRP protocol. A group of VRRP routers work together to form a virtual router. The virtual router is a logical router with a unique fixed IP address and MAC address.
Routers in the same VRRP group have two mutually exclusive roles: master router and backup router. There is only one router in the master role in a VRRP group, and there can be one or more routers in the backup role. VRRP protocol selects one from the router group as the master router, which is responsible for ARP parsing and forwarding IP packets. Other routers in the group act as backup and are on standby. When the master router fails for some reason, one of the backup routers can be upgraded to the master router after an instant delay. Because this switching is very fast and there is no need to change the IP address and MAC address, it is transparent to the end user system.
