Don’t worry: a few weekly English exercises (conjugation exercises or grammar exercises) are enough to make you understand the rules of this or that tense.

Which tenses are used when?
To get by better in English and to understand when to use the present, past or future, there are a few rules.
English conjugation seems to be easier than German. So it can be said that we are lucky to be able to call a rather complicated language our mother tongue. But even in English there are some pitfalls and exceptions.
The simple present is used in three cases:
- To describe a regular or repetitive action: He smokes every day.
- For describing general truths: The sky is blue.
- To describe a future action that must take place: The plane leaves at 8pm tomorrow.
The Simple Past is used in two cases:
- To talk about completed events: I tried to call you yesterday.
- To describe habits from the past: I lived in Paris before my moving to Bordeaux.
In addition, there is the use of the present progressive (or continuous):
- To speak of an action taking place at this moment: H e is playing football in the park.
- To speak of a temporary action: She is listening to music.
- To speak of a planned action in the future: They are leaving to the USA tomorrow.
The past perfect has similar rules:
- To speak of a situation that took place before the Simple Past: I was having a bath when you rang the door.
The present perfect is used to make a connection between past and present:
- I have already bought you a birthday present. The signal words are ever / never, already/yet, it is the first time, for / since or just.
The present perfect progressive (also present perfect continuous)
- It is used to indicate an action that started before the moment of the statement and is not yet complete: How long have you been waiting for him?
The future tense can be expressed in many ways:
- With the auxiliary verb will for an immediate decision, a prediction or to indicate a guess (I will pass this exam).
- With the going-to form: to make an intention or a prediction that follows from an observation (Look at the sky, it is going to rain).
- With the present progressive as described above.
- With to be to express the will of others (They are to pick you up at 5am).
- Use to be about to express the immediate future (She is about to cry).
Once you’ve mastered these tenses flawlessly, you can start dealing with the more complicated forms like the conditional. You now know the most important tenses in English!
