What are the types of Cisco switches ?You must know that Cisco’s position in the multi-protocol router market is very leading. At present, nearly 80% of the routers in the Internet come from Cisco. Of course, in addition to routers, Cisco also has switches. So what are the types of Cisco switches?
The types of Cisco switches
Before talking about the types of Cisco switches, let’s first talk about the series of Cisco switch products. It is mainly based on the “Catalyst” trademark, including 1900, 2800, 2900, 3500, 4000, 5000, 5500, 6000 and 8500, more than ten series.
After understanding the series, we can talk about the types of Cisco switches.
Fixed configuration switch: There are two main types of fixed configuration switches Cisco switches. One type is fixed configuration switches, including most models of 3500 and below. For example, 1924 is a 24-port 10M Ethernet switch with two 100M uplink ports. Fixed configuration switches generally have a fixed port configuration. The scalability of fixed configuration switches is not as good as that of chassis type switches.
What kind of Cisco switches are there? As we all know, Cisco’s position in the multi-protocol router market is very leading. Currently on the market, nearly 80% of the routers on the Internet are from Cisco. Of course, in addition to routers, Cisco also has their switches. So what types of Cisco switches are there?
The type of Cisco switch
Before introducing the types of Cisco switches, let us first talk about the series of Cisco switch products. Cisco switches are mainly trademarked “Catalyst”, which includes more than ten series such as 1900, 2800, 2900, 3500, 4000, 5000, 5500, 6000, and 8500.
After understanding the series, we can now talk about the types of Cisco switches.
The first is a fixed configuration switch. There are two main types of Cisco switches. One type is fixed configuration switches, including most models of 3500 and below. For example, 1924 is a 24-port 10M Ethernet switch with two 100M uplink ports. The general fixed configuration switch has a fixed port configuration. The scalability of the fixed configuration switch is not as good as that of the chassis type switch, but the cost is much lower. Except for limited software upgrades, these switches cannot be expanded. That is to say, it does not have so many modules to plug in. Those modules are fixed when they are bought. You cannot buy some more modules to plug in. This type of switch only supports one type of network.
Modular Switch
There is also a type of modular switches. The ports of the modular switch can be installed with different subboards according to needs. This makes the selection more flexible. Generally, high-end switches are modular, and the host itself has a lot of large switching bandwidth, you can choose to install many different types of interfaces according to your needs. In Cisco switches, modular switches mainly refer to models of 4000 and above. Network designers can choose different numbers and models of interface boards, power module and corresponding software according to network requirements.
How to identify the type of Cisco switch? It is actually very simple to identify the type of Cisco switch. You can read out the specific type from the name of the Cisco switch. The naming of Cisco switch products, take the Catalyst switch as an example, the product naming has a format, and the format is: Catalyst NN XX [-C] [-M] [-A/-EN]. Among them, NN is the serial number of the switch, XX is the number of ports for a fixed-configuration switch, and the number of slots for a modular switch. The -C sign indicates that it has an optical fiber interface, -M indicates modularity, and –A, -EN respectively refer to whether the switch software is the standard version or the enterprise version.
What are the series of Cisco switches? We briefly mentioned the series of Cisco switches in the previous article. Next, let’s talk in detail, 1900 series: 1924; 2900 series: 2924, 2924M; 2950 series: 2950-24, 2950G-24/48, 2950C- 24, 2950T-24, 2950SX-24/48; 2960 series: 2960-24/48TT-L, 296024/48TC-L; 3500 series: 3508G, 3524, 3548; 3550 series: 3550-24-SMI/EMI, 3550 -48-SMI/EMI, 3550-12G/T; 3560 series: 3560-24/48 also have G; 3750 series: 3750-24/48-TS-S, 3750-24/48-TS-E 3750G- 24/48-TS-S, 3750G-24/48-TS-E, 3750G-12S; 4000 series: 4003, 4006; 4500 series: 4503, 4506, 4507R; 6000 series: 6006, 6009; 6500 series: 6506, 6509, 6513. At present, these are the main ones. You can probably distinguish the corresponding types based on the series.
