Is Cancun Mexico a Surf Worthy Destination?

Is Cancun Mexico a Surf Worthy Destination?

Most postcards and magazines depict Cancun’s sea as flat as a board, but that’s not always the case. Cancun has a few hidden spots where things are very different, especially during the hurricane season, June and November.

For the most pretentious among us, Cancun sounds like an odd destination to go surfing, especially when this amazing country has spots like Punta Mita, Puerto Vallarta, or Puerto Escondido. However, this coastal city has so much to offer novice and pro-surfers alike that makes it worth exploring this summer.

Surfing in Cancun is a relaxing experience because you do not need a wetsuit, which, if you ask any comfortable surfer, is the best because you feel more flexible. You will admire 6,000 miles of coastline and unbelievably crystalline sea. The waves aren’t as impressive as many surfers would imagine them to be, but it depends when you go.

Speaking of which, the waves in Cancun, Mexico, have always been consistent year-round. However, you’re wondering what’s the best time to go surfing, then it will be from April to September. You can expect huge waves during this period accompanied by warm weather.

Essentially, once you reach Mexico’s coastline, you will certainly want to dive in the Caribbean Sea, the Pacific Ocean, as well as the Gulf of Mexico.

Best Surfing Places In Cancun

Playa Chac Mool

Named after a celebre Mayan sculpture, this spectacular beach has turquoise water, and it is located at kilometer 10, very close to the Hotel Zone. If you’ve never heard of the Coco Bongo nightclub, then this is your chance because that’s exactly where Playa Chac Mool is.

Initially, this spot may not seem fit for surfing, but you will be surprised. Even the most pretentious Flordian and Mexican surfers have surfed in Chac Mool and loved it.

If your surfing skills require urgent tending, this beach shelters one of the best surfing schools in Cancun too. You can also rent your equipment, so you won’t have to carry it around and embark on your next Cancun shuttle after you’re done.

Playa Delfines

This is probably the most popular beach in Cancun because it’s where the tourists flock to take their Instagram pictures with famous “Cancun” letters.

Playa Delfines is famous for its strong currents, so most people don’t actually swim here. That’s a great advantage for surfers who can have the waves all to themselves. Novice and intermediate surfers can enjoy Playa Delfines too if they head here before noon – to get a calmer surf session.

Surf schools aren’t missing from Playa Delfines either. There are a few decent schools at the beach where you can rent whatever you need.

Playa Marlin

This spot is ideal for early riders who want to hone up their skills on most days, but remember that when it gets windy, it can get quite challenging and really enjoyable for professional surfers.

Playa Marlin is located right behind Luxury Avenue, at kilometre 13. There are palapas to enjoy a day-long shade and public restrooms to stay worry-free, but no rental shops or surf schools, so you might want to bring your own equipment.

If the weather in Cancun isn’t right for a decent surf session, you can always try alternatives like jet-surfing, wakeboarding, or even flow boarding.
