How does printing work?
To understand how printers work, you must first understand how computers represent images. Images on a computer are composed of small colored squares called pixels. To print an image, the printer must first receive the bitmap(map of pixels) from the computer. The bitmap is sent to the printer in a language called Printer Control Language (PCL), which is a set of instructions that tells the printer how to print the pixels in the bitmap.
Once the printer receives the bitmap, the printer prints the pixels in the bitmap using a print head device. The print head is a series of small nozzles that spray the ink onto the paper.
To produce a color image, the printer must print three different colors of ink: cyan, magenta, and yellow. These colors are often called the CMYK colors. For black and white images, the printer only needs to print one color of ink: black.
Type of printers
Printers can be classified into four types, depending on their mechanism to etch the graphics.
Dot-matrix printers are the oldest type of printer. They work by striking an ink-soaked cloth ribbon with tiny metal pins. The pins create small dots on the ribbon, which are then transferred to the paper. Dot-matrix printers are not very common anymore because they are slow and produce low-quality prints.
Inkjet printers produce high-quality prints; they work by spraying tiny droplets of ink onto the paper to create the graphics.
Laser printers work by shining a laser beam on photoconductive drums. The drum absorbs the light from the laser, which causes it to conduct electricity. Tiny metal plates called electrodes then etch an image onto the surface of the drum using this electrical current. After that, toner (a type of powdered plastic) is applied to the image and transferred to paper. Laser printers are fast and produce high-quality prints.
Thermal printers work by heating a thermal print head to produce an image. The print head is made of small resistors that heat up when electricity passes through them. When heated, they change from an insulator to a conductor, allowing current to flow through them more easily, which creates an image on the paper.
How to ensure good quality prints
There are many things you can do to ensure good quality prints from your printer:
- Use good quality paper
If you are going to print something, use good quality paper. This will ensure that the ink does not soak into the paper and cause smudging or bleeding.
- Make sure there is enough ink in the printer cartridge
Your printer will produce better prints with enough ink in its cartridge. You can check how much ink is left in the cartridge by opening up the cover of the printer and looking at the cartridges themselves. Also, modern printers are capable of detecting low ink volume on the cartridges, and they will give you a warning.
- Clean dirty printer heads regularly
Printer heads can get dirty, affecting image quality. To clean them, open up your printer’s cover and look for a small door that says “cleaner.” You should find nozzles attached to a small sponge-like pad. Gently wipe this pad across each nozzle until all of them are clean.
- Use the appropriate settings
Each printer has different printing settings that will produce better or worse prints. Experiment with the different settings to see what works best for your particular printer and type of paper.
