Here are some weight loss myths:
1. All calories are the same:
You must have heard some people saying that as long as you control the amount of calories you consume, it doesn’t matter what you eat. So in essence if a burger and a plate of salad have the same calories, you can eat the burger and still be healthy. This is a big weight loss myth. You are losing out on important vitamins and minerals that are necessary for your nourishment. All calories are not the same.
2. Supplements help in weight loss:
Have you seen those weight loss tea advertisements? Were you told that by consuming tea all day and popping pills, you can lose weight? That is absolutely untrue. Supplements do not compensate for real food. In fact they cause several digestive problems and can cause irreversible damage to your body.
3. Everybody can lose weight and become skinny:
This is also a big weight loss myth that exists in society today. Obesity is an extremely complex disorder with many factors that come into play. Many times it is genetic, hormonal etc. So expecting that an obses person can lose weight easily with a diet and exercise isn’t necessarily correct.
4. Exercise is enough for weight loss:
While exercise is extremely beneficial and important for weight loss, it alone cannot lead to weight loss. Over exerting yourself and doing strenuous physical activity will also make you tired and worn out, without leading to weight loss and good physical health.
5. Starvation leads to weight loss:
A lot of people believe that eating less or skipping meals can lead to weight loss. This is a huge myth. In fact starving yourself can lead to several complications in your body and can cause a significant drop in energy levels in the body. In fact, your bone and muscle development will be severely affected when you regularly skip meals.
6. Carbohydrates make you fat:
Indians thrive on carbohydrates. In fact, many of us cannot survive without eating rice at least once a day. But we’re still healthy. Carbs are important for our metabolism. We need carbohydrates for energy and overall bodily function. A diet rich in only proteins is bad too because it leads to gas and digestive problems as well. A balanced diet is important for weight loss.
